There's more than a touch of irony in the fact that some of the best fish I've had lately appeared on a plate in a vegetarian restaurant.

But the restaurant's full name clarifies the matter -- Veg, a Vegetarian & Seafood Eatery.
True to the name, the restaurant gives as much attention to its seafood plates as to its vegetarian ones. Thus, it is able to accommodate those parties who might not all be vegetarians, although, certainly, the opening of Veg gives vegetarians a reason to celebrate.
Veg is located in a strip mall on Gulf Gate Avenue. It's not a large place, a rather narrow room with tables running down one side and some tables and a small bar on the other, but it's cozy. The long wall also features original artwork. The night I went, half the tables were already filled -- with season approaching, reservations are probably a good idea -- and a small group had gathered around the bar, creating a lively air.
Veg has been open for almost a year now, which has given it time to smooth out all the problems that attend a restaurant launch. It has also allowed Veg to fine-tune its menu, which is small but judiciously chosen. And because vegetarian dishes do not limit themselves to any particular cuisine, the choices are wide-ranging.
Thus, selections can skip from Sweet Thai Chili Taco ($7.99), which fills a tortilla with wild-caught shrimp (tempeh is also available) and rice with a sweet chili sauce, to Avocado Ritz ($7.49), which this time stuffs an avocado with shrimp.
A Mezze Plate ($8.99) samples hummus, baba ganoush and tabouli, along with olives and pita bread. Most people nowadays are familiar with these dishes, but at Veg they will find variations in their preparations, mostly in texture. The hummus, for example, was much smoother than is typical, while the tabouli harkened back to its original, pre-1492 form, with no tomatoes and a bulgur that was very fine and less nutty-tasting than usual.
From a different part of the world, Danish Herring ($7.99) are served traditionally, with a tomato sauce and apple. But this surprising combination actually makes a lot of sense, because the apple makes a nice textural contrast to the fish, while its sweetness plays off the tartness of the pickled herring.
Latkes ($6.99) are potato pancakes, and if you haven't tried them, Veg is a good place to start because theirs are really good, crisply browned on the outside then yielding to the flavors of onion and potato within.
Veg offers a handful of main courses with daily specials supplementing them. On the vegetarian side, there's a Risotto ($10.99) with roasted garlic, sun-dried tomatoes, and mushrooms, and a Portobello Volcano ($10.99) built on the mushrooms, caramelized onions and garlic mashed potatoes, while seafood offerings include Pan-Seared Scallops ($12.99) and Shrimp Scampi ($13.99).
A Corvina ($13.99) came prepared with the utmost simplicity, pan-seared and topped with just a sprinkle of a garlic and herb sauce. And that's all it needed. The searing gave a light browning and crusting to the corvina's firm flesh, but mostly the flavor of the fish shone through.
A Wild Salmon ($13.99) received the same subtle treatment, this time with a splash of chili sauce, but the moist, slightly oily flavor of the salmon made the dish.
Both desserts we tried were superior. A Cheesecake ($3.99) melted with creaminess, while a Fruit Tart ($3.99) had a delicate freshness to it.
Service is informal and friendly. Veg has a small, but serviceable selection of wine and beer.

My wife and I recently visited the Sarasota area and were quite excited to stumble upon this gem of a "...hole in the wall..." Visiting their establishment 3 times on our 6 day trip was a fete quite unusual for us. They offer an eclectic menu appealing to both vegetarians and non- vegs. The food was always well prepared and delicious. For lunch, my wife recommends the Veg Burger. I enjoyed the fish tacos, very light, fresh and full of flavor. As an appetizer I tried the Latkes, fried in peanut oil, you can taste the difference, not greasy at all. For dinner I had a perfect risotto, one of my favorite dishes.
The customer service is fantastic. The family who owns and operates the establishment are very welcoming and accommodating. You'll find they go out of their way to engage their customers.
Trevor Goehring, Dr. Patrick Dower and Chris DeLeonardo try to finish as many veggie burgers as possible during Veg's First Annual Veggie Burger Eating Contest on Saturday, Feb. 5 outside of Veg. Dower and DeLeonardo tied in the first round so they had to have a tie breaker. Dower won 1st place.
Wonderful restaurant!

Loved the mushroom risotto, very tasty. So happy to have a good veg. restaurant in the area. Decor is average to pleasant, but really enjoyed it overall. My husband had the seabass, was very good.
